Remember the (ironically named) Libertyville Abortion Demonstration, in which the filmmaker asks USian Krazy Kristian Kriminalizers what the penalty for women who have abortions — once the KKKs have successfully re-crimalized them — should be?
Well, in all the hooha surrounding that, we at Birth Pangs completely missed
this article by Joyce Arthur of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada about Canadian fetus fetishists opining on the same subject.
Six so-called pro-life leaders are surveyed here and here. Four of the six call for jail terms, while the other two would impose only mental health treatment.
Let’s have a look, shall we?
From the second link there, a guy named Leishman says:
Just as Canadians have no compunction about the imposition of severe criminal penalties for conspiring to commit murder or manslaughter, so they should have no qualms about insisting that Parliament restore a provision to the Criminal Code that prescribes up to two years’ imprisonment for any mother who procures an abortion for her child.
No qualms, eh?
From the first link, a woman named Mary Ellen Douglas of the Campaign Life Coalition invokes one of the zygote zealots’ fave — though as deBeauxOs points out somewhat flawed — hypocrites inspirations:
One of the greatest saints of our time, Mother Teresa, who is known for her kindness and compassion to everyone she met, was asked the question regarding jail time for women who sought abortions and she answered unequivocally that a jail term would be necessary, because the life of a human being had been deliberately taken.
(Um, she’s not a saint yet. Ratzy just beautified her or something. Not that she couldn’t have used a little work, isn’t it a little late for beauty treatments?)
So if a wannabe saint would jail women who have abortions, what would non-saints do?
Also from the first link, a guy named Peter Ryan of New Brunswick Right to Life Association has a bunch of thoughts on the matter, including this nuanced offering:
My final suggestion is that the law be crafted so as to distinguish between those who knowingly end a child’s life and those ignorant about fetal life; that is, those who mistakenly assumed it was “a blob of cells.”
Crafting a just law would be complex because of some dissimilarities with other homicides. But it could be done.
Those byos just love crafting complex stuff, don’t they?
We leave the last word to our fave among this gang, from someone called Theresa Smyth of Aid to Women:
Currently, people involved in abortion reflect not only interior pain, but a cultural disease. Unconsciously aware that something is deeply wrong, too many unhealed women are already “sending themselves” to jail for (other) crimes committed after abortion. By the time we succeed in re-criminalization, there will have been so much healing in our culture that abortion will once again be unthinkable. Thus, someone who committed abortion would be personally aberrant – most likely, insane.
Well. We at Birth Pangs think that by the time the nutbars succeed in re-criminalizing abortion, we will all be as insane as they are.

Except that there NEVER has been such a time.
Their arrogance is surpassed only by their ignorance.
It would be more useful to draft a law to deal with those who mistakenly assume they have any right interferring in a woman’s choice.

I ressemble THAT!
Yes, but aren’t we supposed to have civil debate with these folks and refrain from calling them names? I mean just because they want to throw women in jail for controlling their bodies and think anyone who doesn’t think like them is also criminal and insane doesn’t mean we should treat them nice does it?
Or should we just follow JJ’s idea, and learn to shoot back? Emmit, fetch ma squirelly rifle…
Hello, dollinks, it is BLANCHE, she who is so frikken wunnaful she signs her name in capitals. Jail terms huh? From whence cometh these boring gits? Jail terms. Well, dammit, if we’re gonna have jail terms let’s at least make it against the law to knowingly tell a lie. Right now, in Canada, there is NO law against telling a lie. I’m not talking about little lies like “baby, I will always love you and stand by you through thick and thin and by the way I’m sterile”. I’m talking about lies like the one which says we are not involved in the slaughter in Iraq even though we have ships patrolling the Strait of Hormuz and providing “support” for the yanqui cohort. I’m talking about lies of magnitude. Like the ones which insist doctors and nurses are deliberately ripping to bits babies which would be able to survive outside the womb.
Jail terms. Uh huh. So how does a woman defend herself from jail if she spontaneously aborts? How to prove it was a natural miscarriage?
If we’re going to have all this legal “protection” of fetuses (fetii?), if we’re going to have laws which say the moment of conception is …y’know…because of the “potential” of human life then excuse me but every egg produced by a woman’s body has a “potential” and so does every sperm in the semen ejaculated.
So BLANCHE says if we’re going to have jail terms let’s get with it, Really get with it. Jail time for every guy who commits the sin of Onan. All that potential life winding up in a face cloth or …y’know?
I like the idea of the squirrel gun. Lots of squirrelly types out there. Climbing up on platforms balanced on the roof of a car, I mean, jeebus Freddie, have some dignity.
BLANCHE wants a law making it mandatory to tell the truth. And for the Kristian Krazies, let me point out there is not one of the ten commandments says thou shalt not have Choice but there is one says Thou Shalt Not Lie. Obviously, the Xians would have to agree there should be a law against lying, with severe penalties for those who do lie.
Of course, it would be a bit of a prob for the government. The damned benches would be empty.
