Over at Freak Dominion, they are discussing Bill C-484, aka Kicking Abortion’s Ass Bill.

A poster named dwday addresses the issue of whether a fetus is a person.

Their {pro-choice} position is that it’s not, and given that, it’s perfectly reasonable for them to oppose this law, and they’re 100% right that, if passed, their pro-life opponents will try to leverage it into restricting abortion ‘rights’, and rightly so.

They can hear the dog-whistle. We can hear the dog-whistle. Now, we need to get the rest of Canada to hear it.

 Thank you so much Birth Pangs for keeping me up-to-date on this whole sordid Epp affair. I am still in disbelief that women’s rights are subject to sneak attacks. I’ve told my friends, I’ve signed the petition and I’ve e-mailed my MP (who unfortunately is probably voting yes to the bill – I live in Dundas ON and we have a Conservative MP who has other “Promises” to keep). Thanks again for all your hard work – you make me proud to be a feminist!

It means doing things in steps. For example, trying to pass a law forbidding abortion would get nowhere. So, the people who want to outlaw abortion are taking little sneaky steps. Like this Bill C-484 pretends to be about protecting pregnant women but in so doing, it recognizes and creates ‘rights’ for the fetus. So, now there are competing rights between the fetus and the woman.

In the US, such laws are used to criminalize pregnant women’s behaviour such as taking drugs, refusing a Caesarian section, etc. Women have gone to jail under laws like C-484. There are also sad stories of at least two teenagers that I know of who asked their boyfriends to beat their stomaches to cause miscarriage. The boys did and were charged, convicted, and put in prison.

    Dear Women,

Poland’s Minister of Health, Ewa Kopacz, has just announced the government’s plan to establish a database of all pregnancies in Poland in an effort to eliminate illegal abortions. If this idea becomes law, every pregnant woman will be registered by her physician. Her
pregnancy will remain under state surveillance, so that she cannot terminate it.

We consider this a shocking violation of women’s human rights, the right to privacy, as well as a blatant breach of patient-doctor confidentiality.

We encourage you to join Polish women in responding to the Minister with letters and used tampons/ sanitary napkins (a tampon soiled with red ink or juice will do just fine) proving that you are NOT pregnant.

Here is the address and a sample letter you may enclose with the evidence:

    Minister Ewa Kopacz
    ul. Miodowa 15
    00-952 Warszawa
    Poland

    Dear Minister Kopacz,
I know that you are planning to build a database of pregnancies in Poland. I am not a Polish citizen, but I too would like to be registered in your system. I thought you may be interested to know that I am not pregnant, and therefore unlikely to have an abortion. I send you my towel/ tampon as proof. I will be glad to keep you up to
date on the state of my reproductive system.
    yours sincerely,
    (name, address)
