Srsly, this is important. Scott Tribe suggested this last week, and that we also send some love in the direction of the Supreme Court of Canada, too.

That is so important. I spent a few moments to write a very personal letter:

    Your excellency,

I would just like to commend you for your decision to award Dr. Henry Morgentaler the Order of Canada. If it weren’t for the Morgentaler Clinic, and safe, legal, and free (under OHIP) abortion, I would have had a baby with an abusive, heroin and crack addicted boyfriend. I couldn’t afford birth control every month and he wouldn’t wear condoms. Eventually I got pregnant. To have a baby under those circumstances would have been disastrous. At the Morgentaler clinic, I was treated well, with respect and caring. A counselor spoke with me to ensure I was secure in my decision and to offer follow up care if I so desired. There was no judgment or attempt to force me into anything I was not comfortable with.

Now, many years later, having finally managed to get out of that situation, I have worked very hard to save up enough money to go back to school. I am finishing my Masters, and aiming to get a PhD in history at the University of Toronto. I am in a stable, happy, healthy relationship, and hope to have a child in a few years. A child for whom I will be capable of caring, and to whom I will give all of my love.

I have no doubt there are thousands of Canadian women with their own stories, who have been affected for the better by the option to have a safe abortion. No reproductive decision should ever be forced. Because nobody knows the situation better than the mother, nobody is better qualified to make her decision. Dr. Morgentaler, by courageously providing these services despite negative legal and social consequences, immeasurably helped Canadian women on their journey to equality and increased liberty. For that he deserves the recognition you and the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada have given him with the prestigious award.

    Sincerely,

Disclaimer: Many posts on this site are tongue-in-cheek. But make no mistake: We don't joke about challenging those who oppose women's control over their reproductive health. Protecting women's rights is serious business. So here you'll find news and views, facts and figures, drawn from Canada and the rest of the world. At all times, Birth Pangs is written with a recognition that choice is choice. We fully respect a woman's choice to have babies just as much as we respect her choice not to.
