the black ewe: Vegetarian vs. veterinarian
Every so often at suppertime, my 7-year-old breaks into gales of laughter when he sees me eat a few bites of meat. “Mum, you’re a veterinarian, you can’t eat meat! – I’m going to tell your boss on you!!” His 11-year-old brother rolls his eyes and tries to explain for the umpteenth time the difference between veterinarian and vegetarian. But for Z, it’s a running joke – I’m pretty sure he knows the difference – the words are too similar and the idea that an animal doctor would eat her patients is a crazy kind of funny. The fact is, I’ve … [Read more...]

The Stormy Days of March: Conservatives: Evil, Racist, Don’t Deserve to be Our Government
There’s not much more I can say about the latest Conservative atrocity, other than the fact that this outlines the very reason that conservatives should never ever be given power, and how increasingly disgusted I am with our “government” each passing day. On a related note. I’m looking for Ignatieff’s backbone, anyone seen it? I could have sworn it was around here somewhere. … [Read more...]
the regina mom: Happy Birthday, Prairie Lilies!
A version of this article was published in Canadian Dimension Volume 43, Number 2. Feel free to leave your greetings in the comments section, below. Happy Birthday, Prairie Lilies! by Bernadette L. Wagner Last year, in celebration of International Women’s Day, the Canadian Labour Congress and a collection of Saskatchewan’s labour organizations hosted an Equality Dinner in Regina. It provided opportunity for feminists old and new to come together with supportive brothers in a social setting. Those kinds of opportunities have been few in recent years. Feminism in Saskatchewan had … [Read more...]

redjenny: Impatient for Spring
March 2, 2009 - Impatient for spring and inspired by Mother Earth News, I planted three kinds of lettuce (obtained at Seedy Saturday). Green oak, red deer tongue, and mystery lettuce (from the seed exchange).March 21, 2009 - Off to a respectable start:The first to germinate was the mystery lettuce, followed by the oak leaf. Red deer tongue still hasn't germinated. Bad seeds? Wrong germination temperature? Once the first round germinated, I sprinkled more seeds randomly. Today:They are such beautiful babies!p.s. Can you imagine only having spring once every 30 years?Red Jenny Home … [Read more...]
The Stormy Days of March: Don’t Stab Yourself in the Face Hour 2009
In honour of our conservative minded cousins doing the best they can to act like childish contrarians, or in other words, the morons that they are, I propose that us progressives tack on something extra to Earth Hour 2009. My suggestion is that we advocate that people don’t stab themselves in the face for a whole hour! Imagine the conservative outrage! How dare we come up with something agreeable!? And of course, the ones who are truly idiotic will be hilarious entertainment as they stick all manner of pointy objects in their faces! So come on folks! Don’t Stab Yourself in the Face … [Read more...]

the black ewe: Veterinarians and the seal hunt
Here in southern Quebec, it’s maple syrup season. This year, the elements are in our favour: the nights are cold, and the days are (slightly) warm and sunny, which makes for perfect sugaring-off weather. There’s not too much snow left on the ground to hinder sap collection, and it hasn’t rained too much to make for a soggy and dismal harvest – but rain is forecast for next week. My son collected a large bucket of sugar water from one of our maples, and we’ve decided to use it as a beverage rather than boil it down to 1/40th of its volume to make syrup. Maple syrup … [Read more...]
Politics'n'Poetry: The Crash of France’s Nuclear Poster Child
The Star Phoenix has boostered the nuclear industry in SK, no doubt. In fact, in 2007 it cited AREVA as one of Saskatchewan’s top 100 companies. the regina mom: Is the PM losing control?
There is so much weirdness going on in federal politics this week, I have to wonder if Mr. Harper is losing control of his rightwing radicals. Or, perhaps he’s under pressure to give those radicals more voice and has allowed these things to occur to appease that faction of his party, to hold his rightwing coalition together. It certainly looks strategic. Wonder what I’m talking about? Well, just take a look: My favourite cowboys, those Cowboys for Social Responsibility, took time to fill us in on the latest story about the gun-crazy Yorkton-Melville MP, Garry Breitkreuz. Lilith Attack: "Bush is a Worm!" Calgary Protest Photos
Yesterday's protest against Bush speaking in Calgary as brought to us by our very own Calgary Chamber of Commerce was a creative success. To raise our voices in collective activism is empowering and initates necessary dialogue. The papers were reporting 200-300 people in attendance but I would estimate much closer to 500 or more. Suited attendees were heckled and shivered in the cold while lined up along the block listening to our sneering and chanting. The media's reporting of the protest as violent (here and here) is not representative of my experience. There were drums and noisemakers, performance … [Read more...]
redjenny: Canada’s Banks: Accidentally not in Crisis Yet
Hahahaha! From Rick MercerThe National Post agrees:Canadian banks – saved from stomping around as monoliths on a world stage backed by Canadian taxpayers -- are the least ugly in what can only be called a reverse beauty contest among banks. You know how we used to laugh at the guy who keeps all his cash in a big old sock, or the woman who has all her savings under her mattress?
